On this day, July 22, 1983, Richard Harold ("Dick") Smith flew the first solo around-the-world flight in a Bell JetRanger III helicopter, VH-DIK. With a flight time of over 260 hours and 32,258 total miles flown, Dick landed at Bell Helicopter in Hurst, TX. This flight also set the world's first solo-flight in a helicopter over the Atlantic Ocean.
